Which iPhones support eSIM?

Every iPhone since the XS and XR (2018) supports eSIM. The exceptions are models sold in mainland China, Hong Kong and Macao, which use two physical SIMs instead.

  • Check in Settings

Open Settings → Cellular. If you see Add eSIM, your iPhone is ready.

  • An EID number

The ID of your phone's built-in SIM. Dial *#06# to show it.

  • Carrier-unlocked

A carrier-locked phone can't take eSIMs from other networks.

Frequently asked questions

Which iPhones support eSIM?
Every iPhone since the XS and XR (2018) supports eSIM. The exceptions are models sold in mainland China, Hong Kong and Macao, which use two physical SIMs instead.
Does my phone need to be unlocked?
Yes. A phone locked to a carrier only takes that carrier's eSIMs. Ask your carrier to unlock it before you travel; it's usually free once your contract is paid off.
Can I use a travel eSIM on my iPhone?
Yes, if it's on the list above and carrier-unlocked. Your main SIM stays in place for calls and texts while the travel eSIM handles data.
