Will my phone work in Turkey? A quick checklist

Most modern phones work in Turkey with a travel eSIM. Check these four things before you go and you'll be online as soon as you land.

Istanbul, Cappadocia and the coast are all well covered by mobile networks. Whether your phone works there comes down to a few checks you can do at home in a couple of minutes.

The checklist

  1. eSIM support. Your phone must support eSIM. Look up your model or dial *#06# and check for an EID.
  2. Unlocked. A phone locked to your home carrier can't use another eSIM. Ask your carrier if you're unsure.
  3. Space for a new line. Most phones hold several eSIMs; delete old ones you no longer use.
  4. A plan for your dates. Pick the number of days that covers your whole stay.

Data only, and what that means

Travel eSIMs give you mobile data, not a local phone number. Messaging and calling apps work over data as usual, and your home number can stay active on the other line for texts such as bank codes.
